We
understand the special needs of women and how they
change throughout their life. St. Francis Medical Center provides
several services of particular interest to women address a woman's
changing needs.
Breast cancer is a malignant or potentially
life-threatening condition. However not all breast lumps are
malignant.
According to the National Women's Health Information Center, most
lumps are benign or noncancerous. You should have any unusual
lump examined by a doctor. For additional information, contact
our Breast Care Coordinator at
609-599-5201.
Mammograms can detect breast abnormalities before
you can actually feel them. Mammograms remain one of the most
effective tests for detecting breast cancer in its earliest and
most treatable stage. To schedule a mammogram, call 609-599-5163.
Heart disease was once considered a man's problem.
According to the American Medical Association, cardiovascular disease
is also the number one killer of women. The American Heart Association
estimates that 1 in 9 women ages 45 to 64 have some sort of heart
disease but the ratio jumps to 1 in 3 for women over 65. According
to The Food and Drug Administration says that women are more likely
to have so-called silent or unrecognized heart attacks. For
further questions, talk to your doctor.
Osteoporosis is a potentially crippling disease
where there is a loss of bone tissue. This creates a susceptibility
to fracture. This condition afflicts approximately 25 million
Americans, 80% of whom are women. Osteoporosis has often been
called the silent disease because it doesn't produce symptoms until
a fracture occurs. Bone densitometry
can safely, accurately and painlessly measures bone density and the
mineral content of bone. To schedule a mammogram, call 609-599-5163.
Menopause
does bring many changes to a woman. It can cause serious health
problems for women such as increase risk of heart disease and osteoporosis.
Other symptoms are hot flashes or flushes, vaginal/urinary tract changes,
headaches, night sweats, trouble sleeping, tiredness and melasma (benign
skin condition). For further questions, talk to your doctor.
