Bariatric surgery is a gastrointestinal surgery for
obesity. It is an option for persons who are obese and cannot lose
weight on their own or who have serious obesity-related health problems. The
surgery promotes weight loss by restricting how much food a person
can eat. Bariatric surgery at St. Francis is performed through
small incisions instead of a larger incision..
Gastric bypass surgery creates a smaller stomach
and allows food to pass around the first part of the small intestine. You
will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original
size, which reduces the amount of food you eat. Bypassing part
of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This
leads to weight loss.
Adjustable gastric banding is
a restrictive type of weight loss surgery. It involves placing an
inflatable silicone band around the upper stomach to restrict food
intake. The band can be tightened or loosened over time to change
the size of the passage.
Sleeve Gastrectomy creates a thin sleeve of stomach by
using a stapling device, and removal of the rest of the stomach. The
sleeve is about the size of a banana which limits the amount of food
which you can eat and helps you feel full sooner.
The sleeve can be the first step before
gastric bypass or it can be a single procedure. If a sleeve
gastrectomy is used as part of a two step procedure, the first step
is for the surgeon to create a small stomach “sleeve”. After
a period of time the gastric bypass procedure would be done. This
allows food to bypass the first part of the small intestine resulting
in fewer calories being absorbed and a reduced amount of food you
can eat. The two step procedure is usually done in patients
with a BMI greater than 50 or in high risk patients.
