Catholic Health East

A TRANSFORMING HEALING PRESENCE

Catholic Health East is a multi-institutional Catholic health system, which is co-sponsored by 15 religious congregations and Hope Ministries, a Public Juridic Person within Catholic Health East. Based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, the System provides the means to ensure the continuation of the Catholic Identity and operational strength of the sponsors’ health ministries, which are located within 11 eastern states from Maine to Florida.

The system includes 13 acute care hospitals, 46 freestanding and hospital-based long term care facilities, 12 assisted living facilities, 5 continuing care retirement communities, 18 home health/hospice agencies and numerous ambulatory and community-based health services. Catholic Health East facilities employ approximately 43,000 full-time employees as partners in ministry. In the U.S. it is the ninth largest health system ranked by net patient revenue; the fourth largest Catholic health system ranked by acute care beds, and the third largest health system operating assisted living facilities ranked by residents. CHE is the largest not-for-profit home health system provider by visits.

Catholic Health East has four divisions, the Southeast Division in Tampa, Florida; the Northeast Division in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Mid-Atlantic and Continuing Care divisions in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

 Catholic Health East - It's History and Mission

Catholic Health East was formed through the coming together of twelve religious sponsors and their three health systems. In May 1997, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, Franciscan Sister of St. Joseph, nine regional communities of the institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, and the Sisters of Providence announced their intent to form a new co-sponsored system. In the fall of 1997, Allegany Health System, Eastern Mercy Health System, and Sisters of Providence Health System combined legally and operationally to create Catholic Health East.

The formation of the System reflects the intention of the sponsors to strengthen the role and identity of the Catholic health ministry in the eastern United States. It is grounded in the sponsors’ historic commitment to the dignity of every individual, the sacredness of life, and special dedication to caring for the poor, the elderly, and disadvantaged. Catholic Health East is able to use its collective strength and resources to pioneer new and creative ways of responding to community health needs.

Catholic Health East enables its religious sponsors and participating health care organizations to realize benefits in three primary areas:

Sponsorship

To create a stable vehicle for religious sponsors to maintain sponsorship and Catholic identity of their health ministry into the future;

Stewardship

To enable more effective stewardship of collective resources to achieve maximum benefit for the communities served and the common good of the Catholic health ministry; and

Strategic Planning

To use enhanced size and critical mass to strengthen the positioning of individual local health ministries and the Catholic Health East System as a whole.

 Mission Statement

The mission statement of Catholic Health East states its purpose and its ongoing commitment to the healthcare ministry.
