When You Arrive at the Emergency Department

Every day many people come to the ED seeking help for a wide variety of problems. These can be minor injuries, trauma, lifethreatening disease and mental health issues. Often, you will come to the ED on the advice of your primary care physician. When you arrive, you will be seen by a greeter, and then a triage nurse, who will determine your immediate need.

We encourage you to provide the nurse with a list of your medications or the actual medicine bottles. The nurse will then bring you into the Emergency Room for further evaluation and treatment. Even at times when there are many patients and limited space, we strive to bring all of our patients into the Emergency Room as quickly as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are people who arrived after me seen before me?
The severity of the illness or injury determines which patients are treated first. Patients with the same level of need are taken on a first come, first served basis. In addition, rooms in the ED are equipped differently. This affects the order patients are seen.

At times, the ER visit can take longer than expected. Why?
The number of patients in the ED, the severity of their conditions, and lab or radiology tests ordered may extend your ED visit.

What happens once I’m in the exam room?
Once examined by a member of our team, x-rays or other tests may be ordered and the registration staff will verify personal information (i.e. driver’s license, address, phone number and insurance information).Based on your evaluation and the results of the tests, the physician proceeds to treat you.

May friends and family stay with me?
You are encouraged to have family members and friends visit you in the treatment area. However, space limitations, patient safety and confidentiality factors may sometimes forestall or prohibit these visits.

How will I know what to do after I leave the ED?
Your nurse will provide and review written discharge instructions that will explain how to care for yourself at home.

We encourage you to ask your doctor or nurse any questions you have while you are in the ED. Once you get home, our nurses are still available to answer your questions. Please call 609-599-5210.

You may also receive a follow-up phone call a day or two after you are discharged.
